Product Description
Tinidazole 500 mg tablets
What Tinidazole is used for:
- Tinidazole is used for the treatment of the following medical conditions:
- infections caused by organisms known as protozoa, like amoebiasis and giardiasis (stomach infections) and trichomoniasis (a genital infection).
- infection associated with stomach ulcers in combination with other medicines.
- gingivitis (gum infections).
- prior to surgical procedures to prevent bacterial infections from developing.
- infections of the blood, skin, lung, chest, genitals or womb lining.
- vaginitis (vaginal infections).
Do not use Tinidazole:
- If you are allergic to Tinidazole, or any similar medicines or any of the ingredients in this medicine.
- Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
- If you currently have or have previously had a blood disorder.
- If you have central nervous system (CNS) disease, including epilepsy (convulsions).
- If you are trying to become pregnant or during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.
- If you are breastfeeding.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Stop the medication right away and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you develop allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, decreased blood pressure and dizziness.
- Talk to your healthcare provider, if you develop abnormal neurological signs (e.g. vertigo, dizziness and difficulty in controlling movements) when taking this medicine.
- Your healthcare provider may recommend that you stop taking this medicine if needed.
- Do not drink beer, wine, or spirits during treatment and for 3 days after your last dose.
- Drinking alcohol when being treated with this medicine may cause stomach cramps, flushing, palpitations and vomiting.
- This medicine may affect fertility in males and females.
- Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you are planning to have a baby.
Possible side effects:
- Possible rare side effects include allergic reactions and convulsions or fits.
- Common side effects that usually go away during treatment when your body starts adapting to the medicine include nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps or pain, headache, skin rash or itching (usually affects the whole body) and vertigo.
- Side effects of unknown frequency include unsteadiness or clumsiness, dark urine, tiredness, redness of the neck or face, numbness, pain, tingling, or weakness in feet or hands, chills or fever and painful mouth ulcers, unpleasant metallic taste, dizziness, temporary decrease in white blood cells (does not usually cause signs or symptoms), tongue discoloration and swollen or sore tongue/mouth.
- Other medicines and Tinidazole
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications including prescription medicines, over the counter medicines, herbals, vitamins and supplements.
- Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are taking blood thinners like warfarin.
How to take Tinidazole:
- Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
- Your doctor will determine the duration of treatment and the dose that you need to take depending on your infection.
- Your doctor may recommend a different dose if you are on dialysis.
- Take tablet during or after a meal.
- Take tablet with a full glass of water.
- Swallow the tablets whole.
- Take your doses at the same time every day.
Children under 12 years
- This medicine is not recommended for bacterial infections in children under 12 years since it was not studied in this population.
- However, it may be used for protozoal infections in children under 12 years because it was shown that it does not cause side effects that are different from the ones experienced in adults.
- Your doctor will determine the dose needed for a child and may recommend repeating the dose once in case the infection does not completely clear up.
Infection associated with stomach ulcers
- The usual recommended dose is 1 tablet (500mg) orally twice a day.
- Your doctor will probably prescribe two other medications along with tinidazole.
- The usual duration of treatment with the three medicines is 1 week.
Most bacterial infections
- The usual recommended dose is 4 tablets (2g) on the first day followed by 2 tablets (1g) once a day or 1 tablet (500mg) twice a day for a total duration of therapy of 5 to 6 days.
Bacterial vaginitis (a vaginal infection) and acute ulcerative gingivitis (a gum infection)
- The usual recommended dose is 4 tablets (2g) given as a single dose.
- The dose may be 4 tablets (2g) on two consecutive days if you have vaginitis.
Bacterial infections prevention after surgery
- The usual dose is 4 tablets (2g) given as a single dose around 12 hours before surgery.
Protozoal infections, intestinal amoebiasis (a type of stomach infection)
- Adults: The usual recommended dose is 4 tablets (2g) orally once a day for 2 to 3 days.
- Children: The usual recommended dose is 50 to 60mg/kg of body weight orally once a day for 3 days
Amoebic involvement of the liver (a type of liver infection)
- Adults: The usual recommended dose is 3 to 4 tablets (1.5 to 2g) orally once a day given for 3 to 6 days.
- Children: The usual recommended dose is 50 to 60mg/kg of body weight orally once a day given for 5 days.
Giardiasis (an abdominal infection) and trichomoniasis (an infection of the sex organs in males and females)
- Adult: The usual recommended dose is 4 tablets (2g) as a single dose.
- Children: The usual recommended dose is 50 to 75mg/kg of body weight as a single dose.
How to store Tinidazole:
- Keep out of the reach of children and pets
- Store medication in a dry place below 25°C
- Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the box
- Keep medication in its original pack to protect it from moisture and light
- Do not use damaged tablets
- Do not dispose medication in the wastewater or household waste
