The active substance in Depakine 500 mg with valproate.Depakine 500 mg belongs to a group of medicines used to treat epilepsy and mania.Depakine 500 mg is used in the treatment of:In adults: Epilepsy• Primary generalized epilepsy and seizures• Types of attacks:absence seizures (petit mal), generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal), tonic and atonic seizures, myoclonic seizures, infantile spasms.• generalized epilepsy and epileptic syndromes:absence epilepsy, juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (syndrome Janz), epilepsy with generalized tonic-clonic seizures on awakening, photosensitive epilepsies.• Lennox- Gastaut Syndrome• Syndrome West• Focal (partial) epilepsy and seizures with or without secondary generalization.Mania, where you may feel very excited, elated, excited, enthusiastic or hyperactive. Mania occurs in an illness called "bipolar disorder". Contain the active ingredient : Sodium Valproate which is also used to treat adults with a completely unrelated condition called bipolar affective disorder or manic depression. It treats episodes of mania and can also be taken as a mood stabiliser to help prevent further episodes of mania.
In addition sodium valproate is sometimes used off-licence to prevent migraine in adults.
Sodium valproate prevents epileptic fits by stabilising excessive electrical activity in the brain. It is thought to achieve this in two ways: by increasing the activity of a natural 'nerve-calming' agent called GABA in the brain, and by preventing electrical signals from building up in nerve cells in the brain.
It's not fully understood how sodium valproate works as a mood stabiliser in bipolar disorder, but it is thought to be to do with the increased activity of GABA in the brain.
What is it used for?
Treatment of generalized epilepsy (clonic, tonic, tonic-clonic, absence, myoclonic or atonic seizures). Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
Treatment of partial epilepsy: Partial seizures with or without secondary generalization.
Treatment and prevention of mania associated with bipolar disorders.
